Pirates of Praise (a Star-Studded Cast)

// April 23rd, 2008 // No Comments » // Just for Fun, Music

Pastor Brent handed me the DVD with this on it this afternoon. That’s basically an open invitation to make this public, right? LOL!

Our pastors were visiting Brent’s father’s church last week in Hot Springs, AR. On Wednesday night, the church’s media group meets while other classes are going on and they decided to film and edit this. It was debuted at their Sunday morning service last weekend. Wow! I’ll bet you the anointing fell! ROFLOL!

BuzzDash: The Game

// April 11th, 2008 // No Comments » // Games, Pop Culture

I’ve posted my opinion a few times on the BuzzDash site…

BuzzDash is a site for gauging popular opinion on a wide range of topics – from sports, movies and politics to relationships and spirituality. Built upon individual polling modules called buzzbitesTM, BuzzDash provides a real-time forum where people can solicit, measure and share opinions on nearly any issue.

I ran across BuzzDash: The Game today.  It’s a fun, Family Feud, guess-what-the-majority-vote-is type of game.  Give it a try and see how you do.  I just scored a 10 out of 15.

First Funeral

// March 7th, 2008 // No Comments » // Family Life, Spiritual

Well, not my first funeral, but the first one I’ve ever officiated. I got the call from my mom last Sunday afternoon that Uncle Walt had passed away and another call on Monday afternoon that my Aunt Lori wanted me to officiate. I was her “first pick”.

At first, with all that was going on back here at home, I didn’t think I was even going to be able to go. But I talked it over with Deanna, made a bunch of phone calls to cancel appointments, re-schedule rehearsals, and get people to facilitate some things while I was gone. The day we left was Deanna’s birthday. There’s never a good time for the unexpected, is there?

I wasn’t sure what was going to be expected of me until I arrived at the house on Tuesday evening. We got in the car and drove the 9-and-a-half hours to get to Coon Rapids, MN (Twin Cities) where I promptly pulled out the laptop and started taking notes. Pastor Brent had sent me a few files to get me organized, which was a great help. I took everything back to bed that night and stayed up ’till about 2:00 AM gathering my thoughts.

I can’t even describe the emotions I was going through. I felt physically sick Tuesday night and most of Wednesday. I don’t understand how one is supposed to “get a grip” when you’re doing a service for someone that you love so much. I watched as the service area filled up with people and overflowed into the foyer area. Then, I gathered the family together to pray with them, led them into the room where everyone had gathered, took a deep breath, and then the music started playing.

I was already tearing up before I even got to the podium. How do people do this?

I think the service went pretty well. My Aunt Lanette and her daughter Stephanie got up to sing a song, I had everyone stand for prayer, we shared some memories and stories, and I closed with a short five-minute message of comfort. There was one more song and it was over. I “escaped” out the side door and within minutes, tears were streaming… it was like I had been holding it back the whole time and I could finally let it release.

Uncle Walt will leave a big hole in a lot of people’s lives. He was such an amazing person. Here’s a snippet from the prayer I prayed during the service…

Father, God, how can we thank You enough for the gift that You gave us in Walt? He was so full of life that it was infectious.

You gave Walt the gift of caring for and loving people in such a unique way. I can’t remember an encounter with him where I didn’t walk away feeling loved, appreciated, cared for… In fact, I think he inspired many of us who lived life next to him. There was just something special about him that made you smile inside.

You created Walt with a sense of humor that could always break the ice. He could be in the room and have the whole place rolling in a matter of no time. Thanks for that.

Walt welcomed you into his life so that you felt like “family”, even if you weren’t a blood relative. He had a warm, open heart that accepted people. Like You did, Jesus.

Walt was also very “real”; he always told the truth, even if it hurt. But that’s okay… so did You. And you both always meant it for the best of us – even if we didn’t understand it at the time.

God, we don’t understand why he’s left us now. Many of us weren’t ready to let go just yet. Our pain, our sadness, and our tears are very real today, but, God, we take comfort in the fact that today He’s with You.

He believed it. He talked about You with tears in his eyes the last time I saw him. So, God, give him a big hug for us today. Tell him that we love him and miss him terribly.

And God, I pray for the friends and family that are here today (and also those that couldn’t travel here today), that You would comfort… surround with hope… use the people in our lives to give encouragement.

God, we pray all this in Your name,
Amen.

Destination Northwood: Day 8

// January 28th, 2008 // No Comments » // Family Life

Today was our last full day in New Hampshire. Bryan went out for Dunkin Donuts this morning. That was another moment from Dad’s past; I guess he used to eat them semi-frequently back-in-the-day. We had our donuts and coffee and were on our way to the town of Ossipee by about 9:30 AM. Ossipee is where Joe, Mom’s brother, lives and it’s been a while since any of us have seen his family. Karen didn’t get to go with us this time; she had to get back to work today.

The drive was about an hour. We followed Bryan’s GPS to the neighborhood, but then had to call for the house number when we got there as it wasn’t getting us right to the house as it will sometimes do. We found it quickly after that and were greeted as we were getting out of our vehicle in the driveway. Joe and Kathy have a beautiful house. We got the tour upon our arrival and sat down to share pics and stories before having lunch. I hooked up my laptop to their TV to share a few digital pics and movies of my own. That was kind of fun; I was trying out some new features on the laptop that I’d never had the opportunity to try before.

After lunch, Joe and Kathy took us on a drive around Ossipee to show us some of the houses that he’s built in the area. Here’s a quick video of the house that he’s currently trying to sell and also a quick view of the outside of their house at the end.

Here’s a few pics from our afternoon at the Scherr house…

Their son — and my cousin — Joey came home and visited with us after he got back from school, too…

We stayed there for an early dinner, featuring a homemade blueberry pie a la mode that was incredible. Joe had to lead his Cub Scouts group shortly after dinner, which worked out fine, since we needed to get back to Northwood and pack up our stuff for our departure tomorrow morning.

We got back to Bryan and Karen’s around 7:30 PM and found Karen just finishing up her work for the day. She had baked a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies (my favorite), so we sat around the table and snacked on those with some tea and some coffee before Mom and Dad left for the evening. We didn’t stay up much later either — I think everyone is tired out after a week full of activity and hanging out.

I’ve had a great time. Bryan and Karen have been such gracious hosts. The food has been excellent and there wasn’t a moment that I’ve been bored or looking for something to do all week long. There were a couple of things on the list of “to-do’s” that we didn’t get to do: #1) get up to Dartmouth College for a tour (Bryan and Karen say that they will try and video it for us and give us a virtual tour) and #2) Bryan wanted me to meet his mom, Karen. That would have been fun, too. I guess there is always next time, preferably with Deanna and maybe the kids.

So, thanks MUCH Bryan and Karen for a fabulous trip. I’ve got a lot of love for you guys; it’s been wonderful…

Now, I’m on the edge of my seat, ready to get back home to Deanna and the girls. Can’t wait to see them!
