Hey hey hey, Kids!
I’m just a little bored. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t have things to do at the moment, its just that I don’t want to do them. Have you ever felt that way? I remember feeling that way quite often when I was in school. There were always plenty of things to do and there was always plenty of time to do them in. I still, however, often found myself accomplishing little to nothing. I have since found that motivation is the key to the problem.
There are two key terms we need to learn here. One is the problem and the other is the cure for the problem. First is apathy – definition – I don’t care, I couldn’t care less, who we talking about? Never mind, I don’t care. Second is empathy – definition – I care, I care for people, I want good things for those that I know, who we talking about? Oh yea, I remember that guy. Did his momma make it through…
The anatomy of a slacker is apathy.
It is at this point, dear reader, that you should take note that we are no longer just talking about “things” but we are talking about people. Real live actually breathing, blood pumping through veins, people. Apathy – the major apparatus worn by the slacker – says, “I don’t care about things getting done or the effect that things not getting done may have on me or the people around me.” Empathy says, “I want the best for me and the people around me.” Empathy is the arch nemesis of Apathy.
The anatomy of a Christ follower is empathy.
The bible tells us in Colossians 3:23-24 “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.” The attitude of a Christian should not be that of a slacker but that of a hard worker who cares for those around him. It is not enough to understand that we are causing ourselves to fail when we act as a slacker, we must also see the effects of our actions on the people around us and Christianity as a whole. We must empathize.
The point? Yes, I suppose that I haven’t been clear. If I choose to not do my work today, I do not suffer alone. I am part of a body. If I do not pull my weight my family will suffer, and my church will suffer as they stretch and strain to take on the extra weight of the things I have neglected to do.
It is the same for everyone of every age. Whether in school or in the work place. When we choose not to do the things that are our responsibility to do, the people around us suffer as they stretch, strain and strive to meet the goals that we chose to fail. Apathy is the enemy, empathy is the key. Choose to care about yourself and the people around you today. Choose to pull your own weight. Choose to work as the part of the life community that you were made to be. Also, do it with a smile
