My name is Derick Brown. I am 27 years old. I have been married to a wonderful woman for six years and we have two wonderful children together. I graduated from bible school when I was 21, became a Youth Pastor and have followed God to the best of my ability, and I am sure, some of the time, to the best of His ability. Now, at the end of all of that gaining and working and following, and of making what I believe were the right decisions, I live in a van down by the river.

I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I remember when I first saw the SNL sketch of Chris Farley playing a “motivational” speaker (Matt Foley) who was telling some kids who had been smoking marijuana, “First off, I am 35 years old, I am divorced and I live in a van down by the river!” He spent the rest of the sketch telling the children that if they continued making poor decisions in life they would eventually end up “in a van, down by the river!” In that sketch, the van down by the river was the ultimate failing point. For years, I have joked with people about failing in life and ending up in a van down by a river…HAHAHA!!! It was funny, before. Now it’s hilarious beyond all reason.

I find it funnier than ever because I have not failed! God has not failed! We, my family and I, have been given our dream, and then some. We always wanted to minister full time. We now have that. I get to focus on family and ministry and not feel like someone is being robbed of my full attention. This is a dream come true. So why the, “van down by the river,” you ask? I’m asking that too.

Here’s the only hitch so far in the transition. It may not even be a hitch when all is said and done but today, when the sun is bringing over 100 degrees of fun I think it’s a little bit of a hitch. See, our home in Sheridan has yet to sell. So, we are using my mother’s motor home as temporary lodging until something else comes up. The air conditioning works but has trouble keeping up when the outside temps get to be over 85 degrees or so. We have the RV parked behind the church. What also runs behind the church is a little river. An RV is really nothing more than a large van. So then, basic math says that we live in a van down by the river.

Here’s the moral of the story. Sometimes following God’s plan for your life may put you, “in a van down by the river,” but don’t consider it a fail. Consider it a future funny story. Consider it vacation. Consider it a learning experience, but above all, consider it a hilarious turn of events, that you were given the gift that I have. To live in a van; down by the river.
